Technician rebuilding an automatic gearbox on the teardown bench

Repair or full overhaul?

Not every gearbox fault needs a full rebuild. Some problems come from one part, such as a solenoid, a sensor, the valve body or a leaking seal, and can be repaired on their own. Others, such as worn clutch packs or internal damage, mean the transmission has to come out, be stripped down and rebuilt. Our diagnostic tells us which one your car needs, so you only pay for what is needed.

Targeted repair

One part is at fault: a solenoid, sensor, valve body or leaking seal. We fix that part and leave the rest of the gearbox alone.

Full overhaul

Wear or damage inside the gearbox. The transmission comes out, is stripped down, worn parts are replaced, and it is rebuilt and refilled with the correct ATF.

Strengthening upgrade

The engine now makes more power or torque than the gearbox was built for. See gearbox strengthening & upgrade.

What happens when you bring your car in

Diagnostic (from S$30). We read the transmission fault codes and check the gearbox to find the actual cause.
Quote before any work. We tell you the fault, whether it needs a repair or an overhaul, the price and how long it should take. You decide.
Repair or overhaul on site. Our teardown benches, transmission jacks and diagnostic tools are in our own workshop, so the gearbox does not leave us.
The right ATF, in the right amount. The gearbox is refilled with the manufacturer’s recommended or gearbox-specific fluid.
Back to you with a warranty. All repairs come with a standard 6-month warranty unless otherwise stated.

What affects the cost of a gearbox repair

We don’t publish a price list, because two cars with the same symptom can need very different work. These are the things that decide the price, and we explain each one in your quote:

The gearbox type and make. A conventional automatic, a CVT and a dual-clutch gearbox are built differently.
What has failed. A single solenoid or seal costs far less to fix than worn clutch packs or a damaged torque converter.
Parts needed. Which parts have to be replaced, and whether they have to be ordered.
How long the fault has been left. Driving on a slipping gearbox can spread the damage, which is why we suggest a diagnostic early.

How much does a gearbox repair cost in Singapore?

It depends on the car and the fault, so we don’t quote blind. We start with a pre-repair diagnostic (from S$30) to find the actual cause, then give you a clear quote before any work starts. WhatsApp us your car model and symptoms to get started.

Do I need a full gearbox overhaul?

Not always. If the fault is in one part, such as a solenoid, a sensor, the valve body or a seal, that part can often be repaired on its own. A full overhaul is the right fix when there is wear or damage inside the gearbox, such as worn clutch packs. The diagnostic (from S$30) tells us which one your car needs, and you get the quote before any work starts.

How long does a gearbox overhaul take?

It depends on the gearbox and whether parts have to be ordered, so we give you a time estimate together with the quote. As one example, a customer’s Audi A4 overhaul was ready after 3 days (see his review on this page).

Can I keep driving with a gearbox problem?

It is best not to. Slipping, jerking, a warning light or limp mode usually get worse with driving, and a small fault can turn into a bigger repair. If the car can’t move or doesn’t feel safe, we tow it to our workshop for free during office hours.
